MESSAGE FROM PRIME MINISTER JULIA GILLARD
G'DAY USA AUSTRALIA WEEK 2013

julia gillard portrait"G'day" is the greeting that Australians share with each other at our most friendly.

We took the formal English expression "Good Day" and turned it into something relaxed and informal – reflecting the easy-going nature of our people and our egalitarian ethos.

So when we say "G'day USA", we are saluting the values of freedom, equality and democracy that unite our two countries and the long history of our friendship as partners for peace and security.

The ties that bind us are enduring and deep. For example, the United States is the biggest foreign investor in Australia, and in turn Australians have become familiar faces in the America media, film and television industries.

But G'day USA is about much more. It is about showcasing to America our dynamic, contemporary society and the capabilities we have to offer in fields as diverse as the creative arts, energy, tourism, clean technology and water management.

Above all, it's a great opportunity for Australian and American leaders from government, business, tourism, academia and the arts to gather, make new friendships and renew old ones over some great Aussie food and wine.

The G'Day USA Australia Week program 2013 will be one of the most effective and far reaching programs to date. I trust all participants will enjoy these innovative events, which will bring our two nations even closer together.
